Meaningless! Meaningless!
and when you search
for the meaning of creation
a beach umbrella takes flight,
a needle is inserted between vertebrae
from cowering to exaltation
Navy lined the white climb of myrtle
Nylon sheathed the sun as
gulls circled for broken bread
Yellow eyed the rabbit-eaten iris
while Riptide took Indigo’s hand
Ocean wore her rings inherited
from the low open shore
Sage bowed to a castle swept
from exaltation to cowering
and when you search
for the meaning of creation
a child is born in the hospital,
a mother is impaled in the sand
Twenty-two Cherry Blossoms
on the train to Baltimore
I see twenty-two cherry blossom trees
a slow Saturday at the airport,
six metal pillars
where I would wait for her
six men to my right
where they would wait
to wheel passengers in blue chairs
I drink her gin and tonic,
I spend too much on dinner
we talk on how
our perceptions of God
and my lack of housekeeping
caused the break
in her rented blue Ford
she kisses my cheek
having driven me through
light-bearing Baltimore
I see two petals on the door
of the last train out
